Tooth Profile : Has Impact on Obtaining Constant Velocity ratio
The one side of any tooth in cross-section between outside circle and root circle is called the tooth profile. Tooth profile consists of a concave portion joining the tooth space bottom and is called fillet curve or root fillet.

To achieve a velocity ratio which is non fluctuating depends on the teeth profile. When two gears work with each other then wearing and friction is produced. This also depends on tooth profile. Several tooth profiles provide a velocity ratio that is constant. Development of a tooth profile if arbitrary tooth shape is given to provide constant velocity ratio is quite possible.
However, two constant velocity there are two tooth profiles that provide constant velocity and are very popularly used in the modern time. These are involute and cycloid. At first cycloid was quite common. After that the involute got more popular especially in the applications of drive train and is very easy to manufacture.
