Twin Cam Engines Used In Harley-Davidson

Harley-Davidson motorcycles released Twin Cam 96 in 2007 and Twin Cam 88 in 1999 model year. Prior to them evolution engine was quite popular.

They have many features which were found in previous engines from this company. Both are V twin engine at 45 degree and consist of two cylinders. The engine is air cooled and push rods are used for activating valves.

Crankshafts consist of only one pin. Softail models did not use Twin Cam prior to year 2000. It was because of the design of the chassis and increase in vibrations.

If engine was directly mounted on Softail frame it would cause rise in vibrations. Dyna models have rubber mountings. Hence, this vibration problem does not exist there.

Harleys have produced a version called Twin Cam 88B to get rid of this problem. It consists of a different design of the engine block and counter balancers are driven by twin chain. The Softail models at present use Twin Cam 96B.
