V6 engine: A Popular Choice

The V6 engine consists of six cylinders that are mounted on a crankcase. There are two banks having three cylinders each. The angle set between them is generally right angle or acute angle. The common crankshaft is driven by six pistons. It is very common in cars of the present time and is second only to inline four engines.

The V6 engine is a very compact engine. It is shorter as compared to straight 4. It is also narrower than V8 in several designs. It is commonly used in front wheel drive transverse engine layout. The reason behind its increasing popularity is due to the fact that modern cars have less space for engines and there is more need of power. These engines have replaced the earlier inline-6 that were too long and could not fit in several compartments of modern engines. However, they are more complicated and less smooth as compared to inline 6. But, V6 engine is more rigid and compact. Moreover, less torsional vibrations are produced in crankshaft.

These engines have become hugely popular in medium size cars. They are often used in cars as optional engines incase straight 4 is used as standard. They may be used as base engine incase V8 is the other option. The V6 engines that have come recently have the capability to deliver torque and horsepower comparable to V8 engines. Besides this, emissions and fuel consumption is also reduced. Modern V6 have displacement of the engine from 2.5 L to 4.3 L.
